XPeRT keyboard layout
Sunday, October 16, 2005

So, while looking for something on the 'net, the original target of which I cannot remember, I came upon the discovery of the XPeRT keyboard layout!

That's it, I remember now, I was playing Typer Shark and was trying to see how my score of 57 WPM ranked amongst the human population. I believe I used to type faster.

Anyway, the XPeRT keyboard layout is supposed to be faster than the DVORAK keyboard layout and only two commonly used keys switch positions, as opposed to 24 rearrangments that is required of the DVORAK keyboard!

With 24 key rearrangments, it is no wonder that there is much resistance to change and thus the world is still toiling away on the QWERTY keyboard which was invented in 1878 with the intention of slowing people down so they will not cause key jams with the mechanical keys flying towards the ribbon on the old school typewriters.

In contrast, we should use as efficient a keyboard as possible today as we can type with as much speed as we can muster, limited only by the physical movement of the human fingers. With only 2 common key movements, as well has having two keys for the letter "E", the most common letter in the alphabet, could the XPeRT keyboard be the next big change in computing?

There is more information here on wiki. My only reservation is that, after typing with XPeRT, I might not be able to type with a QWERTY keyboard again which would hinder me from using computers other than my own.

Due to excessive spam, I have now moved my blog to http://dho.ca/wp. Please feel free to visit me there to comment!
