Face Off :: Facial Transplant
Thursday, December 1, 2005

Remember the movie Face Off starring Nicholas Cage? Now feast your eyes on this article which claims that doctocs in France have successfully transplanted part of a face!

Now how about the psychology behind it? How would you react, to waking up every morning, and instead of seeing the familar husband or wife, mother or father, daughter or son, that you see every day, and instead fix your eyes on the face of this sudden total stranger?

How would the person who received the transplant react, when everytime they look in the mirror, they see a different person? Even worse, it is the face of the dead, as it was obviously someone who died who donated that face.

How about the family and friends of that dead person? Would the husband of the dead wife, now be jelous that the woman bearing the face of his beloved is now sleeping with another man? What if that person had enemies, would the face transcend death and instantly transfer the enemies of the deceased to the recepient?

How would you reconcile your past? "Sorry, but I have changed a lot ... a LOT ... from when I was a child."? What about when asked for Photo ID?

Would the recepient start to attain the identity of the person whose face they received? Does that include behaviours due to sociel forces, affilations of theirs and of their donors, etc? What if we perceive this new face as being less attractive than our previous face?

Many many questions abound about this change of identity.
