Team China’s olympic women’s hockey team could not penetrate the great wall of Mississauga as the Mississauga Junior Chiefs downed them 4-1 at Iceland arena on Sunday.

Despite a sold out crowd at the arena chanting “jia you” (meaning add oil, a Chinese form of encouragement), the Chinese squad looked a little lackluster earlier on in the game.

Still, the spirit of competition and sportsmanship was embodied in the contest as Team China battled hard in the last half of the game, showing great resolve to compete against the Junior Chiefs. Chinese player Qi Xueting also displayed great puck handling ability, completely throwing off the Mississauga goaltender to open her team’s scoring in the shoot-outs after the game.

The game even saw Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, at 88 years old, taking a ceremonial penalty shot against the Chinese goaltender to thunderous applause from the standing room only crowd.

This was China’s fourth of six games they will be playing against the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association teams. In a previous pre-Olympic training trip to Ontario late last year, they went 15-5-1 against 21 OWHA teams.

Chinese team leader Yu Tiande told the Mississauga News that the Chinese women’s team is ranked 7th in the world by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
