Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara … Fam Jam
I will have to admit that many of my pictures and stories from Asia aren’t up yet. It has been a hectic month, with my last days in Malaysia and Singapore spent with family. When I got back, adjusting to jet lag kept me asleep most of the time.
Right after I came back, my cousins who are studying in the US arrived so I was happy to have a second chance to spend some time with them and show them Canada.
I realized though that unless you have a couple of months, you can’t show someone Canada. You can show them Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, but not Canada. That is, not unless you have the time to show them Nunavut, Nova Scotia, British Columbia as well as all the other provinces.
Being Canadian, I sometimes lament that there is no real Canadian identity. Yet, I marvel at our cultural diversity even as Canadians.
Forget for a second that there are Chinese Canadians, Irish Canadians, African Canadians and people of all kinds of ethnicities. Toronto Canadians, Halifax Canadians, Alberta Canadians all differ in culture as Canadians.
It is that diversity that makes Canada so unique. During my 3.5 months in Asia, I fell deeply in love with that continent, its scenery and its people. However, I never fell out of love with Canada.
