New Phone Old Android OS
Several new phones have been released with old android operating systems. This fragments the Android community and I think seriously hinders app developer efforts as well as the effectiveness of the Market place. How do you sell apps to users of new phones who can’t use the new apps programmed for the new OS?
So here’s the plan. Hardware manufacturers, once a new firmware is released, stop churning out old phones and get what’s already on the market updated asap.
Android being open source is both a problem and a curse. Its open source status allows companies to customize as much as they can to their phone, rather than customize the phone to the OS. If they have invested in months customizing the OS to their phone, and a new OS comes out, they are unlikely to re-invest more time and $$ to re-customize the new OS.
