Finding the light
I love walking around a city at night, looking for interesting places to shoot. It’s all about finding a cool light source that hopefully comes with a great backdrop to create a scene that conveys a mood.
When your eyes are open, there are a lot of places you can find for a shoot. In the short walk between Yonge Dundas Square to Nathan Phillip square, we completed our photo walk and shoot.
I also love setting up lights and if it wasn’t for having to subway and having class, I might have brought along a light with me. You never know when a little extra light can be useful.
Still, while there is creativity in setting up lighting, there is also a sense of satisfaction when you make the best images out of lights that you find along the way.
You have to realize sometimes, that the light just won’t work out, but that’s where the journalism training comes in and you simply work around the situation to make the best shot.
Maybe it’s the fact that I’m pretty nocturnal, but I’m drawn to shadowy places with overhanging lights. In this case, the consolation to the cold we had to endure was a healthy serving of snow. Using various alley ways in the city, we tried to emphasize the snow while showcasing the styles of the ladies involved.
Ever curious, I’m always looking for interesting and new ideas. If you do have some, drop me a line!
