Here’s some interesting news from the week.

Random Act of Kindness

By now, I’m sure you have all heard of Mr. Dave Tally, the hero from Tempe Arizona who found a backpack with $3,300 in cash.

People moved by his selflessness have sent him checks — totaling far more than was in the backpack — and have offered him jobs to help him get on his feet.

Being homeless and in need of food, shelter and repairs to his bicycle, you would figure he would thank the heavens for striking the jackpot.

Instead, he selflessly returned the money to its rightful owner – a college student who saved up the money to buy a car.

His act has earned him over $8,000 from donors and even job offers.

Mayor Hugh Hallman even proclaimed last thursday night Dave Tally Day.

Canadian Cellphone Victory

In more local news, we are a step closer to cell phone freedom in Canada.

Until now, Canada was the only developed country where the standard industry practice of wireless carriers was to lock all mobile phones sold, and to not unlock.

~ Bruce Hyer, MP

It really is unfair to purchase a phone and still be locked to a carrier. Even if you paid full price for a phone, you could not use it on another carrier previously. That really is a shame.

I think cell phone companies should flood the market with their phones and allow the consumer choice in purchasing which model they wanted. Especially now that all Canadian carriers offer GSM, you won’t have to worry about CDMA vs GSM phones.

It will help with competition to purchase one phone and use it across any carrier you want. This way, carriers are forced to lower their rates.

Now if only Bell and Telus will join Rogers in unlocking their phones. Note however, you still have to pay $50 to unlock your phone. You still have to pay to fully use the phone you already for.

Shark Killer

Once upon a time, killing lions with your bare hands was cool. Now, the ante has upped to killing sharks with your bare hands.

Dragan Stevic ended up jumping straight on the shark which was lurking near the beach, probably looking for its next victim.

After all, sharks are natures’ apex hunter.

Dragan Stevic from Serbia not only eliminated the shark who was hunting tourists in Egypt, but also did so while drunk.

Apparently, while under the influence of alcohol, he took a dive from a high diving board and landed onto water that wasn’t so soft. It turns out, the not-so-soft water was the head of a shark who died instantly.

All hail “Shark El Sheikh” for saving the Egyptian tourist season.

McDonalds’ Unhappy Meal

Apparently McDonalds is to blame for making children fat.

Its important to note that government intervention is partly responsible for the success of fast food.

Forget the fact that parents usually pay for their kids happy meals, Monet Parham, a mother of two from Sacremento says “I object to the fact that McDonald’s is getting into my kids’ heads without my permission and actually changing what my kids want to eat.”

Apparently giving out toys in Happy Meals is akin to cigarette companies advertising and luring young kids to smoke.

Well, remember to head to your local McDonalds and get your own Hello Kitty Watch before it is too late!
