If you want to see a great example of photojournalism this is it. Her photos tell a story in a powerful way, with something we can relate to and reaches to your heart.

One experienced photographer told me that if you do not make it to the front lines, Afghanistan, Iraq or Haiti for example, your brand of photo journalism isn’t going to stand out. That is true, in that those are the stories people want to see but not many get to access.

Byer, however, didn’t need to go to the front lines in some far away place. She found those “front lines” right in her own community. She found that front line in Derek Madsen’s battle against cancer and his mother, Cyndie French’s courage to rage against the dying of his light.

Her story gave insight into French’s and Madsen’s struggle. It documented their ups and downs and let viewers into some of the most intimate moments in their lives.

Without further ado, here are links to her biography as written on her Pulitzer page and her story A Mother’s Journey.
