Went with Henry and Tina to watch Immortals today. One of my fascinations, Greek mythology, has been one of Hollywood’s latest crazes lately.

According to mythology, it was Gaia who wanted to release the Giants from Tartarus to aid in the Olympians’ destruction. In the movie, we follow Theseus on his quest to stop King Hyperion’s attempt to free the Titans from Tartarus.

** SPOILERS FOLLOW **

The movie starts off a little slow, but starts to pick up the pace. The fight scene at the end could have been as epic as the Battle of Helms deep. It would have been nice had Theseus been picking off the sea of invaders with his magical bow. Instead, for all the fuss made about the bow, it was shot only six times in the movie: in battle, to kill four people, once to break down a wall and one more time to release the Titans.

I also thought it was silly that the city made to guard the Titans had the access to the temple so close to the front. You did not have to breach the entire wall to get to the access way to the temple. The access was close to the main gate. Whomever designed that fortress was a major fail at strategy.

It was made in the same style as 300, with the awesome eye-catching cinematics. Beautiful seascapes and fight scenes accompanied a lot of gore. I didn’t remember as much head smashing, bodies cooking and throat slitting in 300 as they did in this movie.

While I’m sure there is an endless supply of abs and biceps eye candy for the girls, Athena makes us guys want to die and head to Mount Olympus. Or at least, join the Hellenic army and hopefully become a God. Then again, we don’t really want to mess with Zeus’ little girl given the heavy-handed punishment he dishes out. Or mess with her, as she (or a stunt double) does some pretty cool martial arts moves!

This is one of those movies when you can take your mind off the strategic mistakes, could be a pretty decent movie with the visuals.
