Rocking Take 3

Epiphone Guitar

This is my second attempt at playing the guitar. Actually, kinda my third. I started off a while back with a cheap classical guitar from Toys’R'Us that had it’s neck snapped under tension from the strings.

I then decided to get an acoustic, but my chunky arms and inflexible sholders made it really uncomfortable to play. Today, I made one last attempt into the guitar world. I got an electric.

Apparently, my cousins who are 1/2 way around the world all play the guitar or drums and are in bands, both on my dad’s side and my mom’s side. I’m pretty excited.  Anyone want to give me some pointers on how to play? :)

Talking to a friend last night about the world was pretty cool. She’s one of the traveller people. Actually, I’m supprised I haven’t yet jumped on the boat to sail the seven seas as quite a few of my friends do the frequent travel deal. I like how they see the world in the big picture.

I like my life the way I see it unfolding in the next little while … when I’m not working, I’m either gym, training or guitaring. Add some spontaneous hanging out w/ people and it’ll be perfect.

On Tibet and China

I got this off Jason’s Facebook note:

This is from Brendon Zhang’s note which shows a poem written by one Chinese person’s questions for the western world.

What do you want from Us?
A Poem Dedicated to the last 150 years of this planet.

By a Slient, Silent Chinese.

When We were called Sick man of Asia, We were called The Peril.
When We are billed to be the next Superpower, We are called The threat. When We closed our doors, You smuggled Drugs to Open Markets.
When We Embrace Freed Trade, You blamed us for Taking away your jobs. When We were falling apart, You marched in your troops and wanted your fair share.
When We were putting the broken pieces together again, Free Tibet you screamed, it was an invasion! ( When Woodrow Wilson Couldnt give back Birth Place of Confucius back to Us, But He did buy a ticket for the Famine Relief Ball for us.)
So, We Tried Communism, You hated us for being Communists.
When We embrace Capitalism, You hate us for being Capitalist.
When We have a Billion People, you said we were destroying the planet.
When We tried to limit our numbers, you said It was human rights abuse.

When We were Poor, You think we are dogs.
When We Loan you cash, You blame us for your debts.
When We build our industries, You called us Polluters.
When we sell you goods, You blame us for global warming.
When We buy oil, You called that exploitation and Genocide.
When You fight for oil, You called that Liberation.
When We were lost in Chaos and rampage, You wanted Rules of Law for us. When We uphold law and order against Violence, You called that Violating Human Rights.
When We were silent, You said you want us to have Free Speech.
When We were silent no more, You say we were Brainwashed-Xenophoics.

Why do you hate us so much? We asked.
No, You Answered, We dont hate You.
We dont Hate You either, But Do you understand us?
Of course We do, You said, We have AFP, CNN and BBC
What do you really want from us?
Think Hard first

My comment on there was that generally, people wanting to be in your position will try to knock you off that position with ridiculous allegations. People who are secretly doing what you’re doing, will try to detract attention from themselves by placing the negative spotlight on you.

Chinese human rights violations? Hey, how about Abu Ghabi prison and other US soldier attrocities?

China used to bomb Tibetan temples? Doesn’t the US bomb mosques and homes fairly frequently these days?

I’m not a big supporter of bombing Tibetan temples, nor am I am advocate of destroying mosques and homes.

However, one thing sticks out: It’s always about propaganda. The problem here, is the title of the poem.

“by a Silent, Silent Chinese”

The Chinese just don’t care about what people say or think, and forge along on their own path. The United States and Western world, however, make sure every negative scenerio is deflected off them and every positive moment lasts for as long as it can.

It is not that either is completely right or wrong. Both countries have their good and their bad but while one just doesn’t care and forges ahead, the other tries to control public perception.

It is intriguing how people “blame the press” for exaggerating stories and portraying China in a negative light. I have always been taught that the press “is the eyes and ears of the public”. We generally just report on what we see.

As for those pro-Chinese people who blame the press for the “Free Tibet” issue going out of hand, think about it from this perspective: the “Free Tibet” movement is a lot more eye catching. Someone geting beat up at the “Free Tibet” rally is a lot more emotional than a bunch of people standing around waving Chinese flags.

A “Free Tibet” rally is more emotional than a pro-Chinese movement at the moment it happens and when publiczed to the world, it will carry that emotion. Granted too that pro-Tibet demonstrations vastly outnumber pro-Chinese ones, the media will focus it’s lenses on that movement.

Last is my answer to the question that the poem above ended with: “What do you really want from us? Think hard first.”

When people think say “I have a problem with you doing X.” If X is the real problem, then when you come to a solution, a compromise, or stop doing X, then the conflict should be resolved.

On the other hand, like in the poem, people come to you saying they have a problem with “X”. Then when you talk to them and arrive at a solution “Y”, they publicly say that you’re not doing the “right thing” with solution “Y”.

So you think hard and ask them to think hard what do they actually want? Afterall, this is probably a mis-communication. They then talk to you privately, so as not to cause a scene, that perhaps solution “Z” would be the best of all.

Finally, after solution “Z” is implemented, they announce to the world through the media that you’re the evil of the world because solution “X” is the way it should be.

Meanwhile, the “silent silent Chinese” simply sits there scratching his head, wondering what went wrong with this “peaceful, discreet” solution? They ask “what do they really want from us?”

That situation really gives you the truthful answer to that question “What do you really want from us? Think hard first.”

China is the world’s largest population, with one of the cheapest labour costs. They are an economic dragon waking up in the far east. Their military might, while currently inferior to the United States, grows rapidly. They are one of the biggest creditors, while the United States is in debt.

Contrary to the writer’s request, they have thought hard. The answer is simply this.

“You are in a postion that I want to be, or you are in a position to catch up and surpass me. So I will use propaganda to force you aside, because I want to be the only one on top and in first place.”

Quantum, Law of Attraction, Predictability

If you are looking for a truly scientific explanation of the title, you have definitely arrived at the wrong place. However, a seminar I covered today for the News linked with something I read at Chapters about quantum states.

The seminar today was from Michael Losier about the Law of Attraction. In particular, simply the vibe we give out can affect our situation. When we think negatively, we are actually adding the negative to our vibe. If we think someone is an ass, we could make them an ass to us, simply because we “include them in our vibe”. That definitely ties in with the phenomenon called a self-fulfilling prophecy.

He went on to say that our vibe can actually affect the outcome of lottery tickets. That is very far fetched of course. Yet, my purely philosophical link to science based on what I have read, could very well allow for this.

First of all, if you believe in quantum holography, it states that all information is non-local. That is, it exists across space and time. If your body really is a kind of quantum computer, then you can perhaps affect the information in the quantum hologram, not just physically. So what does that mean? Your vibe could really alter information about the world around you!

What I read at Chapters, was about Bohmien mechanics of quantum theory. That is, quantum states are deterministic. What that further means, is that if you know the state of the variables involved in a system, an outcome can always be predicted. Instead of some randomness that happens in life, you have the power to change it! Granted there are many, many, many, many variables you will need to manipulate to ensure your desired outcome, the possibility is there. Of course, the probability of manipulating these variables, is probably less than the probability of actually winning the lottery based on the numbers drawn. (Any mathematicians want to calculate it?)

But what if one day, we develop computers powerful enough to consider all the variables in life? Then everything we do will be predictable. What would life be like if we knew exactly what happens in our life from birth to death?

I was thinking that the exact future and all futures can only be predicted based on the exact state of the universe at a precise moment in time. So one minute change and perhaps all futures change. But then I changed my mind and realized that if you know the exact state of the universe at a given time, and can predict the next state, then you really cannot change because you can predict the next state, which can then be used to predict the following state.

You really have no free will. You cannot choose to be angry or not angry as your quantum state could dictate that, after all, your brain will be chemically altered into the angry state. Everything you do, your choices, your actions are all determined by quantum states.

So what would life be like if it were all completely predictable? If you could know exactly when you get a job, what job you will get, when you will get married, who you will get married to? When you “know” these variables and try to change them, it was already predicted in the quantum equation of life. There really was no change. What would life be?

Some quantum physicist might be reading this and having the most hilarious night of his life. Yet, there is a science in every art, and an art in every science. (You can quote me on that! That was one of the coolest lines I woke up with in my head this morning!)

Tibet …

I have never been to Tibet, although I very much want to. Looks like it cannot happen in the near future. Well, nothing is impossible and I’m sure I can find a way ;) but for now, this is one story from Ryan Pyle who documents life in Tibet

I recently saw a very good documentary about the “Rape of a Nation“. It was about the western industrial powers taking away all the natural resources of the African nations and paying poorly for it. From Ryan’s account, that would seem to be what’s happening to the Tibet.

I could see the Chinese “enhancing” Tibet by contributing to it’s infrastructure. However, when settling the Chinese into Tibet is also a policy, then that infrastructure which the Chinese contributes becomes a very rare resource. It will be a resource where priority would of course be given to the Chinese.

Moreover, if Tibetans love their way of life, who’s to say the Chinese are “enhancing” their life in any way by forcing them to change?

Needless to say, when we meddle in the political affairs of another nation, when we judge what is “right” and what is “wrong”, it is purely based on OUR beliefs of what is right and what is wrong. Essentially, those whom we label as the evil ones are wrong simply because their beliefs and values differ from ours.

Purim Festival

I was covering a Purim Bash recently. The people who did parttake in the celebration said it was a time to celebrate a time to be happy and rejoice and that was the tone of the day. I was very impressed by the community feel of the place and they were very welcoming. In fact, the Rabbi was really nice, hospitable and concerned about his mitzvahs. I definitely give two thumbs up to the guy and the centre for it’s work in helping people. However, there was one thing that raised a question in my mind.

Why would a Rabbi be dressed in Israeli Defense Force fatigues?

Canadian Women’s Hockey League

I had the pleasure of shooting the Canadian Women’s Hockey League championship today and was thoroughly entertained! The last time I shot a CWHL game, it was also between the Mississauga Chiefs and the Brampton Canadette-Thunder. That game was a little slow. This time however, while the first period crawled while the teams were feeling each other out, they opened up with about three minutes left in the first and never looked back. End to end rushes, great scoring chances and awesome puck handling were abundant in the game.

What really impressed me however, was when I was digging up more information for my submissions.

Now when I heard that Steve Young from the 49′ers had a Law degree, I thought it was amazing that someone who devoted much time and effort into his sport, such that he would reach the pros, would also achieve what others would need to put just as much time into to achieve in academics. For a person to achieve these is pretty impressive.

Until I found out, that five members of the Mississauga Chiefs went to Standford, Yale, Harvard and Princeton. How’s that for a smart team?

Censorship and Paranoia

First, we have the British’s ultra paranoid stance on public photography (seen on Francis Vachon’s site). Now we have the U.S. military paranoid about free and easy access to their installations via Google Earth. As mentioned on Defense Tech

With the easy access to free online imagery services such as Google Earth and Yahoo Maps, and other paid sites, military officials are worried an enemy might gain vital intelligence on U.S. and allied military positions anonymously and with little investment.

What ever happened to freedom of information? Somehow, learning and documenting our experiences in the world around us is a thread to national security.

I for one think the real terrorists probably draw the building plans on napkins rather than conspicuously take photographs of military installations. Arresting photographers is definitely not the answer. The real terrorists are those sketch artists. However, beware of the people walking their dogs. Getting their dogs to pee on a certain location definitely could be used as a location marker so I think we should not let people walk their dogs on the street.

Don’t stop there though! Who knows what those shady people do under umbrellas when it rains! Ban raincoats and umbrellas! You never know what is hidden under those!

We should also ban cars. We all know terrorists work in the shadows. Which terrorist is going to pull out an slr outside a military installation just to photograph it? Of course they are going to drive by and shoot it behind some windows in a car!

What about people with photographic memory? Forget camera toting terrorists. This guy Steven Wiltshire is the single handedly the biggest threat to national security!

(Oh and while we’re at it, we should ban Wikipedia too! Look at how terrorists can find out about, and perhaps lure amazing people like Mr. Wiltshire to work for them!)

Open source … your cellphone?

Back in the world of technology, where my reading has been lagging of late (hey, I have to keep up with current events in the social world as a journalist), I discovered that even your hardware can be opensourced. Unfortunately, while software can be easily copied and downloaded as open source with no charge, open source hardware still requires a material charge although intellectual costs are removed.

Still, having open sourced hardware has it’s advantages as you are freely able to modify the product as you wish, giving rise to quicker innovation and more creative products. One such product is the Nokia 1973 based OpenMoko phone.

The line “If you can’t open it, you don’t own it.” on the OpenMoko site does speak volumes about capitalism today. While it is true, we buy products and have exclusive use of it, the material physical product is the only thing we own. Everything else is still patented and owned by the company.

Why jeopardize your sales by repeatedly issuing better and thus competing products when you can bask in the sun for a while, reaping the benefits of your recent intellectual endevours? This thought definitely puts a damper on creativity and slows down innovation. Afterall, a more innovative product is essentially competition to your existing product.

While companies do need some kind of revenue to inject back into the research and development process, most of the revenue stream syphons off into the rich CEO who might not know anything about the technology who is currently bathing in the pool in his $3 million dollar mansion, having recently bought out a small but innovative firm and put their competitive product high up on the shelf somewhere.

I hope to see the OpenMoko phone hit the mainstream market, in addition to other open source hardware. We can evolve ourselves with that technology at a much faster rate.

Also noteworthy is Google’s Android operating system. Based upon the open source Linux kernel, this cell phone operating system has a chance to revolutionize the phone industry.

From the popular mechanics site:

Ultimately, a Google mobile operating system has the potential to be far more revolutionary than a Google phone. Despite the fact that the cellphone industry is a mature one, it has never settled on a standard OS-or even two or three, the way that the PC industry did. Say what you will about the evil hegemony of Microsoft, but the company’s dominance of the PC operating system market in the 80s and 90s allowed software programmers to write code that was universally applicable.

Now if we only had some great open source free energy battery power.

Tasers and Rail guns

I remember back in high school, when we learnt about electromagnetism, I was very interested in the concept of the railgun. When my teacher tried to make one, I recall that the amperage needed to overcome the friction of the paper clip on the two rails, also caused the paper clip to melt and fuse into the rails. I was quite obsessed with making my own, an obsession that has died down since.

Well, the Navy has made such a futuristic weapon closer to reality. Pin point surgical strikes with nothing but kinetic energy instead of explosives would definitely reduce the collateral damage!

Speaking of weapons, apparently the Taser is in the news again, this time used on a 17 year old girl in her own bedroom. I think the “non-lethal” aspect of the weapon makes peace officers forget that it is in fact a weapon. Using the Taser is the same as beating someone down with a baton, or shooting someone. It is an escalated use of force. In the globe and mail article:

“I still am astounded that … three-full grown police officers cannot find some way to deal with a 17-year-old girl apart from using a taser,” Ms. Longley said, noting her client was unarmed at the time and has no criminal record.

“It certainly highlights for me the need for specific policies on taser use,” she said.

Globe and Mail

I really do think that the officers did not register in their mind (at least I hope not) that the Taser is a weapon. If they had fired the Taser knowing it is a weapon, then we have an even bigger problem on hand. In this case, it is almost an “easy way out” of having to subdue this poor teenaged girl. Much like the University of Florida taser incident, pure numbers and even the strength of one of the individuals involved should have been sufficient to subdue the person in question.

“To me, the taser is the last line before the gun is drawn. It’s supposed to take the place of that,” said Mr. Taylor, a former Calgary police officer.

“It’s just completely ludicrous that they would taser a 17-year-old because she was being non-compliant when there was no weapon,” he told globeandmail.com.

Globe and Mail

I wonder what the law says if one civilian Tasered another, claiming that all they wanted was for that person to “move out of the way” or “shut up” or something along those lines. In other words, casual use of a “non-lethal” weapon.

Random Rambles

I was going to say something about pitbulls, but that story will come out soon anyway, so I decided to blog about a few random things that have been going on around this planet.

In a Discovery News article, I learnt how inefficient we were at energy use and production. I had already known that our car engines were not the most energy efficient. According to Wikipedia,

Most gasoline-fueled internal combustion engines, even when aided with turbochargers and stock efficiency aids, have a mechanical efficiency of about 20%
Wikipedia

Yet, I must say I wasn’t quite fully prepared to hear about the whole amount of lost energy in the United States alone in the article

The original goal, in part, was to address a common problem with energy: When it’s generated — by gas, coal, battery, or other means — much is wasted into thin air. In fact, in the United States alone, the amount of energy lost is more than the energy consumed by the entire country of Japan.
Discovery News

The entire article is a cool read still though as it talks about new ways of producing energy. I’m all for alternative fuels as I believe that the next big breakthrough in humanity would be our moving away from fossil fuels. Looking at the things that happen in scifi movies, energy efficiency is always the key. From the Star Trek dilithium warp cores to the Stargate Zero Point Modules, it is these energy sources that enable those space faring civilizations to boldly go where no man has gone.

Speaking of where no man has gone, the concept of virgin birth by some females species is particularly intriguing. Apparently, some sharks can reproduce without having interaction with males!

“We brought in three female bonnetheads on December 15, 1998, and on December 14, 2001, bang! One of them gave birth to an 8-inch-long offspring.”
Discovery News

Unfornately, that takes all the fun out of the reproduction process. Despite all the advantages of being asexual (and of course there are genetic disadvantages too, being genetically worse then inbreeding), sex still somehow survives.

The upshot is that sex beats cloning where long-term fitness, and even survival, is concerned.

“In theory, females that reproduce asexually should enjoy a twofold advantage in fitness over sexual females, yet sex remains the predominant mode of reproduction in virtually all [multicellular organisms],” Silvertown concluded.
Discovery News

Yup, those Taelons and Asgards are definitely screwed. No sex and their cloning is killing themselves. Back on Earth, we are under alien invasion! Apparently the tiny town of Gypsumville Manitoba, with a population of only 65 (and maybe having some genetic diversity issues of their own) has a tainted water supply.

The invader: A meteorite which struck down almost a quarter-billion years ago, creating the 25-mile-wide (40-kilometer) Lake Martin impact crater.
Discovery News

Although, it is a shame that that meteorite doesn’t bestow meteor powers such as in Smallville. It would definitely be cool to be a mutant, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which apparently, the clergy in the UK are accusing their fellow countrymen scientists of trying to produce in the form of “cybirds”

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales sent a letter to parishes which was read in churches on Sunday 20 January, saying the bill raised “key concerns”. The leading concern was about hybrid embryos: “for example, from the egg of a woman and sperm from an animal. To do this would be a radical violation of human dignity.”
Discovery News

Well, I suppose this particular entry is all “Discovery News” related, but really, I do read more than just that. I would post something more diverse, but right now, I am going to hit dreamland and discovery some rest which I have been lacking all week.
