Post Olympics Canada: a new era of patriotism

Canada wins gold ... x14!

Roberto Luongo, the starting goalie for Team Canada men's hockey through most of the tournament, holds up his gold medal as Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in an exciting overtime game at the Vancover 2010 Olympics. The victory won Canada a record 14 gold medals. The most for any nation in the history of the Winter Olympics.

Congratulations to all of Canada’s athletes for the most successful Olympics in Canadian history.

Our athletes were called upon to Own The Podium and that they did. Winning the most gold medals of any country at a Winter Olympics, Canada finished with 14 gold medals, and 26 overall.

Me in my Team Canada hockey jersey

Me in my Team Canada hockey jersey

While there are 15 winter sports events, most of them with male and female events, Canada, and perhaps the world, looks forward to the one game on Sunday the Men’s Hockey gold medal game.

It is easy to miss the fact, already touted by many media outlets, that Canadian women have won 13.5 out of the 17 medals to date.

Canon G10 and more …

I want to shoot an autodocumentary. Kinda like a photo autobiography. But much of my life is routine and when I’m at work, I’m shooting for work so it is hard to shoot my autobiography there. I’ve been shooting a lot of stuff w/ my G10 when I’m not shooting for assignments. However, my photo standards are getting so high, that really most shots are somewhat uninteresting to me. That is, I am getting very picky about my photo selection. Especially since most things in my life are routine.

For example people post lots of great food shots. I’ve taken some food shots, but it seems that unless it documents life in it, I’m beginning to find pictures uninteresting, not worthy of posting.

Sooo … here are mine from work .. ‘cuz that’s all about life :P

Rejection!

Here’s a kid getting rejected as he goes up for a shot or layup.

Sudbury Wolves at Majors

I can’t believe they traded Zac Rinaldo. He was one of the most energetic guys on the team. From a photographer’s perspective, some days, the Majors seem like they are asleep and there was nothing to shoot, then Rinaldo will throw a couple of big hits to wake everyone up.

Sudbury Wolves at Majors

I only take the originals. This kid, Jake Springstead, was cheering for the Majors and I caught this expression. After getting his details, the other kids found out I was shooting for the News and cheered every so often taking a glance at me to see if I was taking their picture. No. I only take the original, naturals. =P And he’s now famous in the city as he’s front page in today’s issue.

Ok, found two non-work photos that might be worthy of posting.

Too much Snow

While snow is good, there really is too much snow this winter.

Chilling with Friends

And more chilling … it’s tough to make chilling shots artsy, getting something more than just a snapshot, while not setting anything up.

Yet it is quite a part of this photo autobiography.

Dave Keon #9 Retirement

Keon #9 Retirement

One of hockey’s greats got his number retired today by the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors hockey team. He gets the distinction of being the first Major to have his number retired.

It must be pretty cool to have your name and number remembered for eternity. Well, eternity being the lifespan of the club. The Majors, being one of the more storied clubs in history, are destined to be around for a long while.

Major Triumph

Majors vs. Frontenacs
Majors vs. Frontenacs

The Mississauga St. Michael Majors end up with a triumphant weekend, winning three games in three days and showing no signs of fatigue in this last game against the Frontenacs.

Coming out hitting hard, these Majors end up with yet another 7-4 win at home. This time, they outshot their opponents 42-41.

Not to take away from their play, they did an excellent job of taking the body and showing energy, but the opponent goalies also were really shaky.

However, if they keep up the great job they did this weekend, they will go far this season! They definitely didn’t disappoint and I was well entertained while working!

IceDogs Meltdown

IceDogs at Majors

Niagara IceDogs’ goaltender Mark Visentin looks on helplessly as the puck sails past him. The puck hit the back of the net seven times between Visentin and starting goaltender John Cullen.

It was refreshing to shoot and watch a game where not only the Majors won, but they demolished the IceDogs with a score of 7-4. All that despite being outshot 38-29.

The last Majors game I shot was seriously lacking in energy. In fact, the game and lack of energy made me really sleepy shooting it. This one however, had big hits, lots of shots on net and a lot better puck movement. The players really looked like they were alert and trying to play.

I shoot the next one on Sunday. Hopefully it’ll be as awesome as this one!

Deked!

Mississauga Chiefs vs Vaughan Flames

Mississauga Chiefs captain Sommer West dekes out Vaughn Flames goalie Stephanie Lockert as the Chiefs defeated the Flames 11-3 at the Hershey Centre on Thursday, December 11, 2008.

That was goal number five for the Chiefs who doused the Flames with ease.

I was looking for a shot that was not quite a goal shot and came up with a few. I will pose some of those in due time!

Johnny Bower at Chapters Square One

Johnny Bower at Chapters Square One

Yet another assignment with a hockey legend and I decided not to get my picture taken with them. I really should! I missed out on a photo opportunity with Bobby Orr and now Johnny Bower.

Bower had this tip for all you autograph seekers:

If you’re getting something fabric autographed, get some hairspray and coat the area that is going to be signed. That way, the ink won’t spread and run.

Good thing to know! Thanks Johnny Bower! :)
